Struggling Math Students

There are many children that struggle with math on a daily basis. This is a subject that seems to be sometimes difficult for children to understand. It is important to be patient with a child that is struggling in math, and help them in any way that you can to master the subject and stay up to the average level of their peers. Generally, a few skills mastering techniques, games, and a little extra attention can very quickly help a child master math skills that they previously found to be impossible. What they really gain out of the extra attention that they need is the confidence to master the skill and move on with their lives. Here are a few great math mastering activities for children that will help bring self confidence to their lives.

One of the ways that you can build confidence is to help with mastery, which is really all that it takes to understand math, you must master it. One of the easiest ways to master it is to memorize it. Kids still have to memorize their times tables, they are the basis of most of the math that we do today. A great way to do this is to have a child work on drills that are found in a workbook, or you can find a lot of drills online. Have them take 10 or 15 minutes a day and do a couple of math drills or math worksheets, it will make a huge difference in what they retain and remember.

The same type of memorization can be done with flash cards. Help your child make the flash cards, that way they get the benefit out of making them and using them. You can turn it into a fun project where they get to color and create great flash cards, then when they are done, you can use them over and over again to practice whatever skill it may be that you want them to work on. You can use these flash cards to reward your child, as they get a certain number right, give them a small gift; they will work harder to get the right answer.

Young children love simple math's games. Try some of our free downloads, the BBC website also has some great online flash educational math's games for all ages. This can be a very rewarding way to help them increase their math skills. While these games obviously shouldn't be the only thing that the child does, they can be worked in with something like flash cards, if they get enough flash cards right, they can go online to one of the websites and play games. Parents, be sure that you are looking at these websites ahead of time to make sure that they are safe, and always monitor your young children who are playing these games online to make sure that they are being responsible and getting the work done.

A more specific game is basically a memory game that incorporates math. With this game, you can do it a few different ways depending on the child's skill level. It is mostly used for elementary aged children, so it generally works on the sets of ten or adding numbers up to ten. You create memory cards from 1 to 10, a few different sets of them, and you lay them out like you would a memory game. The kids take turns drawing cards and trying to get their cards to match up to the number 10. It works on memory and it also works on knowing what number they need to find so that they can make 10 and get a match. The kid at the end with the most matches wins.

A Go Fish math card game is also very similar to this. With this game, you can do the same thing and use the bases of 10. Give each child a hand of cards, and they must ask the other child for a card that would match up with one of theirs to bring their total to 10. If they don't have one, they would "go fish" draw a card from the pile and continue the game. The child with the most sets of 10 at the end would win the game. Remember, your child making their own cards just enriches the educational experience.

There are a lot of great math games that you can play with your children to make sure that they are mastering their math skills. Everything from card games, to internet based games, to flash cards, and work sheets will help them build up their math skills. It is important that a child works to master their math skills, this will bring them the confidence that they need to do good in the math subject they are taught on a daily basis in school. See how you can help you child master their math skills with some great additional help and mastery drills.
