Favourite book list
The books reviewed below are our favourite books. Some of them might be regarded as classics, to us they are just fantastic reads just begging you to read again and again.
One Of Us by Michael Marshall Smith
I have read lots of good books in the genre of sci fi and crime, that have stretched my imagination. One Of Us stretched my imagination that far I really don't think it as ever come back to it's original size. Nobody tells a story in the first person like Michael Marshall Smith. Reading this book was like playing Doom for the first time back in the time when you could hear the processor work.
I really don't want to give much away regarding the plot of this book as I might spoil your read. Only I have read this book four times and it still confounds me how original it really is.
Put away those same old books and read One Of Us.
A Disaffection by James Kelman
I first read most of this book on the train back from Glasgow. It's written in a dialect I am lucky enough to understand. A Disaffection is about a sad Scottish thirty year old teacher who has to get up every morning and teach kids who don't really want to be taught and if that isn't bad enough he is already deep into a very early mid life crisis. Full of Melancholy, loads of incredibly funny moments. I feel this book should definitely be included in any list of must read books.
Snakehead Alex Rider bites back by Anthony Horowitz
I know a person getting on in years reading Alex Rider books. I just can't help it! I just really enjoy a good Alex Rider book. So I am going to add my favourite to this list. Here goes, Alex is in deep trouble, he as only just got back from is last adventure in outer space when he is manipulated into helping the ASIS (Australian Secret Service) and this time his target is the Asian criminal underworld the Snakeheads.
This is the grittiest Alex Rider book by far as Alex learns more about his dead parents and narrowly escapes having his vital organs harvested to order while he is still alive. Start this book and you will not put it down until you have turned the very last page.
Demolition Angel by Robert Crais
I have read lots of Robert Crais books, famous for his Elvis Cole novels, which I have probably read every one. Only, my favourite Robert Crais book is not an Elvis Cole novel; but the fabulous Demolition Angel. Mr Red is just the best villain, no conscience, very intelligent and just loves to blow people up, lovely what more could you want from the villain in a book.
A bomb kills a member of the Los Angeles bomb squad and his partner Carol Starkey is technically dead for a few minutes until she is revived. This books plot has so may twists and turns I would have to fill this page to write a comprehensive review. Only, I will just say that Mr Red is not responsible for all the explosions and he is really hacked off that a mere mortal is stealing his work. So they just better watch out as he wanta pay back.
Demolition Angel takes you on a ride through the murky waters of bomb enthusiasts or nutters if you like. I particularly liked the way Mr Red dispatches a bomb hobbyist who can identify him and who currently resides in prison. Just look up the word hypergolic. I am not going to say any more but; just read Demolition Angel!
The Master Mariner Running Proud Book 1 by Nicholas Monsarrat
I was first introduced to this book by my Granddad who liked to read books about sailing the seven seas, strange for someone who served in the RAF during the second world war.
Matthew Lawe a master mariner commits an act of cowardice in the middle of Drakes battle with the Spanish Armada. For this act he is cursed by a witch to sail the seas forever until his guilt is undone. A fantastic book following Lawe on his adventures with Hudson on his last doomed voyage and the buccaneer Henry Morgan the scourge of the Caribbean. He stood at Captains Cook's right hand and much more. All I can say is just read it and then read book number two.
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
I first Read this amazing book during my fourth year in high school and even at the tender age of 14 I knew this was a classic book without the enthusiastic noises coming from our teacher.
When I read this book my friends and I had just started listening to punk rock and I truly wanted to be Holden Caulfield the main character or anti hero as some have described him. I am not going to say anymore about this book only that, it is a must read and you will probably want to change your name to Holden.
